Family Sponsorship

The Family Sponsorship Program allows eligible Canadians and permanent residents to sponsor certain family members for permanent residence in Canada. Sponsored individuals can live, work, and study in Canada once approved.

Under Canada’s Family Sponsorship Program, you can sponsor the following relatives:

• Must be 18 years or older.
• The relationship must be genuine and not entered into for immigration purposes.

• Must be under 22 years of age and not married or in a common-law relationship.
• Children over 22 can qualify if they have a physical or mental condition that makes them financially dependent on their parents.

• Eligible under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP).
• Sponsors must meet specific income requirements and provide financial support for up to 20 years.

• Orphaned siblings, nieces, nephews, or grandchildren under 18 and not married or in a common-law relationship.
• Any other relative, only if the sponsor has no other family members eligible for sponsorship in Canada or abroad.

To sponsor a family member, you must:

• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered under the Indian Act.
• Be at least 18 years old.
• Reside in Canada (Canadian citizens can sponsor from abroad but must plan to live in Canada once the sponsored individual arrives).
• Meet financial requirements to support the family member (except in the case of spousal or child sponsorship).
• Agree to provide financial support for the sponsored person for a specific period (varies by relationship).
